Call for Papers: Conference "Diplomacy, Intelligence and Influence in the Balkans and Beyond, 17th-19th Centuries"
With the emergence and spread of the new diplomacy in the early modern period, intelligence proved to be an essential element of the newly emerging information and communication systems, crucial to the processes of making geopolitical imperial decisions. In the 16th century, in the conditions of the escalation of traditional political confrontations for hegemony in Europe and the emergence of new military and economic challenges “from outside”, going beyond the borders of the Old Continent, political decision-making more than ever needed to ensure a constant flow of up-to-date information. This required the organization and maintenance of networks of loyal contacts to provide it, as well as adaptation to the most effective methods of work.
The conference aims to bring together scholars and stimulate discussion on the intertwining of diplomatic and intelligence activities in the Balkans, emphasizing the role of the human factor, as well as on the organization, work, and effectiveness of networks of contacts and spy networks within the framework of European modernity.
